EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Nguyen graduated from the University of Missouri in Kansas City with two bachelor degrees, one in chemistry and another in psychology.

ADVANCED DEGREES AND MEDICAL TRAINING

He went on to obtain his master’s degree in biomedical sciences at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences where he found a particular interest in anatomy. Dr. Nguyen would ultimately obtain his osteopathic medical degree from the same university, after which, he completed an internship at the Hillsdale Hospital providing care at a rural and underserved area.

NEUROLOGICAL RESIDENCY AND SPINE FELLOWSHIP

Subsequently, he received his residency training in neurosurgery at Beaumont Health in Detroit; a highly coveted spot as there were only 12 slots in the entire nation for this competitive specialty at the time. He was later named Chief Resident. During his neurosurgery residency, Dr. Nguyen developed a special interest in the spine and pursued a fellowship in orthopaedic spine surgery at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) where he was immersed in the orthopaedic perspective of spinal surgery and learned from renowned surgeons.

AOA CERTIFICATION

On recommendation of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS), the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists (BOS) of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) has awarded Dr. Nguyen his AOA certification.

FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC SURGEONS (FACOS)

Dr. Thuy Nguyen recently earned the esteemed FACOS (Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons) designation. This fellowship, awarded by the ACOS, recognizes osteopathic surgeons who excel in their field through dedicated service, surgical teaching, and authorship, as well as active involvement in professional organizations. To qualify, candidates demonstrate their commitment to high ethical standards, continued education, and the advancement of osteopathic surgery. The FACOS designation highlights Dr. Nguyen’s dedication to advancing neurosurgery within the osteopathic medical community.

UNIQUE TRAINING AND EXPERTISE

This hybrid style of training and dual education is rare for a spine surgeon providing for a unique set of spine-focused clinical acumen. His spine fellowship was indeed rigorous as OHSU is only 1 of 2 level 1 trauma centers in the state of Oregon and is actually the only hospital in the entire Pacific Northwest region to be an academic university hospital that is also a level 1 trauma center ensuring an enriching fellowship experience providing for a vast volume and breadth of cases.

SPECIALIZATION AND PERSONAL LIFE

Dr. Nguyen specializes in degenerative disc disease and minimally invasive surgery for the best possible outcomes for his patients.
In his free time, he loves spending time with his family at the beach or traveling.
